Blunsdon House Hotel

Blunsdon House Hotel, set in 30 acres of beautiful Wiltshire countryside, started in 1957 as a bed and breakfast and is an independent family-owned hotel. Along with lovely rooms, they offer conference facilities, wedding venues, indoor swimming pool, spa and gym. They particularly pride themselves on the personal touch they offer.

After concern about rising energy bills, they wanted to find out more about solar for hotels. That’s when they got in touch with Immersa.

Environmental Consideration

As part of their sustainability initiative and consideration of their impact on the environment, Blunsdon Hotel decided to look at renewable energy solutions and contacted Immersa to issue a solar PV design and installation proposal

Immersa were able to offer an affordable and long-term method to reduce their carbon footprint and lower operating costs.

Project Overview

Blunsdon House Hotel consists of multiple buildings, both older and more modern, spread across the site. The hotel has high electricity usage due to its 24-hour operation. This includes the hotel itself, a spa, a gym, and a heated swimming pool.

These facilities require constant power, making energy efficiency a key concern. By switching to renewable energy, the hotel can reduce costs and improve sustainability.

Project Design

A layout was proposed for a 111.3kWp solar system using the older sloping roofs along with the newer PV panels on the newer buildings with flat roofs.  The design of the panel layout on the South facing flat roof captures maximum sunlight throughout the day and converts it to renewable green energy.

Thereby reducing energy consumption and bills and reducing their carbon footprint.

Costs and Savings

The predicted solar generation would be 100,069kWh per year with an estimated energy bill saving in the first year of £20,138.8.

The estimated project payback period would be 5 years with an estimated project internal rate of return of 16.5%.

The price of power is forecasted to significantly increase over the next 5 years over the rate of inflation. As a result, the saving could be much higher than estimated. This is a great opportunity to improve profitability in a challenging environment for the hospitality sector.

Environmental and Energy Impact

The project reflects the concern and responsibility felt by the team who run Blunsdon Hotel, who understand the importance of moving towards a greener future. The team has actively made changes, and this proactive approach shows leadership in promoting eco-friendly practices in the hospitality sector.

Independence from the energy grid is becoming more important for UK businesses than ever before. By installing the solar PV system, they are less affected by price fluctuations and interruptions to the power supply.
