Technical Case Study

In late 2024, we designed and delivered a highly specialised hybrid solar and battery system for a local commercial site.

This project required advanced electrical design due to the site’s complex distribution board layout. The goal was to provide large-scale energy savings while meeting all compliance requirements from the Distribution Network Operator (DNO).

Hybrid solar and battery system

The Challenge

The customer’s site has a complex connection to the local grid. This demanded a carefully engineered approach to system design and integration.

We developed a fully bespoke hybrid energy system—balancing DC and AC-coupled infrastructure across the solar and battery systems.

Our Solution

We deployed a 1MWp ground-mounted solar PV system, split into:

  1. DC-coupled solar feeding into a containerised Alpha ESS TB250 battery system
  2. AC-coupled solar supporting direct site load

Our design engineers created the system layout to maximise energy yield while ensuring electrical isolation, control, and system safety.

Key technical features:

  1. Half DC / Half AC coupled for maximum flexibility and efficiency
  2. Integration with ABB protection and switching hardware
  3. Battery system capable of load shifting, grid support, and peak shaving
  4. Fully DNO-compliant architecture, from protection to export limitation

Performance and Savings

The system became operational in early 2025 and began delivering results almost immediately. By speaking to our clients and monitoring their system, we know that their electricity bill in April 2025 was over £24,000 cheaper than their bill in April 2024.

And not only have they saved on their bills, but their usage has also increased since installation.

Looking ahead, we estimate that the client will save over £200,000 annually on their electricity costs by the end of 2025.

Conclusion

This project highlights how technically complex energy systems can deliver real business value—when backed by expert engineering and tailored design.

The combination of ground-mount solar PV, hybrid coupling, and advanced battery storage provided the customer with resilience, cost control, and a major step toward sustainability.
