Harnessing Renewable Energy
The convenience of charging a new electric vehicle at home and a desire for energy independence bring thousands of pounds worth of savings.
After visiting our Home Energy Solutions webpage and an initial enquiry through the Immersa online renewable energy portal, the client, Demelza Yeoman, wanted to know if we could design a solar and battery storage system for her house.
After completing some major renovation work on the house, including a new basement and the recent purchase of an electric car, the family was keen to look at solar and batteries to reduce their energy bills and become more energy self-sufficient. In addition, they had installed a new hot tub, so they expected their electricity consumption would go up significantly. Although the Yeoman household electrical consumption would rise, they wanted to reduce their dependency on the national grid and reduce their carbon footprint.
As with most clients, they were keen to utilise all available roof space and generate as much of our electricity as they could from solar PV. During our consultation meeting, the family stated they wanted to get as much battery storage as possible to charge the battery off-peak in the winter.
They had a relatively large property with a multi-aspect roof with gables and extensions, so they challenged Immersa to create a solar PV array to meet their energy needs.
With a complicated roof layout, we had to measure and accurately analyse potential shading issues and consider where to store the equipment and battery storage.
Our desktop feasibility study analyses what is possible given the roof space available and then matches the panels to their level of consumption. Our completed survey and analysis found we could add more panels on the west-facing roof, giving additional generation output.
We designed the system to go on a south-facing roof, but we had to avoid two gables, which would be shaded. They also had an extension over the garage with an east and west-facing roof, suitable for installing panels.
The solar PV array will generate around 5331 kWh over a typical year. The home energy app shows whether the generated energy is used directly in the house, charged to the storage battery or EV, or exported to the grid.
After adjusting for inflation and projected electricity costs, the initial system cost of £15,837.28 is predicted to be recouped after just seven years.
Project Specifications
The total value of future benefits and costs, using a discount rate of 4% per year, is £53,751.93. The cost of the PV system is £15,837.28. The net present value of the project is, therefore, £37,914.65. A positive net current value indicates that the project is financially worthwhile.
“The predicted savings that will be made over the lifespan of the solar PV system was a real eye-opener for our client. Payback of the initial investment in seven years made the value of this project speak for itself.”
