St. Ewe Eggs

St. Ewe Eggs, a multi-award-winning free-range egg producer based in the Roseland Peninsula in Cornwall, began as a unique, family-run business in 1967. You can find their eggs in many well-known outlets like Tesco and Ocado. They are renowned for producing high-quality eggs with a focus on animal welfare and sustainability. To further their environmental responsibility and reduce their energy bills, they partnered with Immersa and installed a substantial roof-mounted solar energy system at their distribution centre.

Project Overview

They invited us to consult on energy usage at their egg packaging and distribution centre in Grampound Road, near Truro. After carefully analysing their requirements, we provided a detailed study of their current and future energy usage and designed a renewable energy system to suit their needs.

The project involved installing 680 high-efficiency, 420Wp solar panels, mounted on the roof of the facility, complimented by two large Solax inverters.  This gave a total of 285kWp of solar panels.

The design of the panel layout captures maximum sunlight throughout the day, converting it into renewable, green energy and significantly reducing electricity consumption from the grid. The decision was made that battery storage would not suit this site at present.

It may be worth considering adding in the future, depending on how the company and its energy usage change over the next few years.  This is something that can be done at any time.

Costs and Savings

St Ewe Eggs have a particularly high energy billThey run a lot of machinery on site, which is used constantly during the dayNow they have installed such a large roof-mounted solar array, they can generate a significant portion of their electricity themselvesThe savings they are now making on their electricity bill will soon pay for the initial solar installation cost. The estimated payback time is just 3.5 years.

We also estimate they will be reducing their import from the grid by almost 50%.   This represents a real term saving of over £43,000 per year based on current prices. It is estimated that over a year, between 50 and 60% of the solar energy they produce at the facility will be exported to the grid.  Even at the lowest price of 5p/kWh, this would generate around £9,500 per year.

Environmental Impact

St. Ewe Eggs is making a significant contribution to a cleaner environment by switching to solar power. By drawing less power from the grid, they significantly reduce their carbon footprint. Our calculations estimate that this change saves around 64,500kg of CO2 each year. This reduction in emissions not only benefits the environment but also aligns perfectly with their brand identity.

It reflects the caring and responsible nature of the company’s management team, who understand their environmental responsibility and actively make changes. Their proactive approach ensures they remain a leader in promoting eco-friendly practices in the industry.

Energy Independence

Being more independent from the grid is becoming more important for UK businesses every dayWith their new solar energy system, St Ewe Eggs have ensured more control over their energy production and usage.

This protects them from volatile price changes, allowing them to plan more effectively. Therefore, they won’t be greatly affected by supply issues in the market.

In Summary

Immersa ensured St. Ewe Eggs has the most suitable system installed for their business and environmental goals. As a result, St. Ewe Eggs is now effectively reducing their carbon footprint with our roof mount solar

They are now on the way to reducing their carbon emissions and have perfectly demonstrated how important environmental responsibility is.
